This is the 10% Happier Podcast. I'm Dan Harris. Hello everybody, how are we doing? Today we're going to talk about the neuroscience of reducing your everyday addictions, like scrolling and shopping and gambling and drinking and eating. Plus, we're going to talk about how to work with chronic pain, how to reframe your problems, and we're going to talk about the clinical evidence for stopping and smelling the roses.
This is a great interview. I really enjoyed this episode. My guest is a neuroscientist who's come up with a protocol called More, which stands for Mindfulness Oriented Recovery Enhancement. This protocol, in my opinion, quite brilliantly weaves in aspects of mindfulness. with cognitive behavioral therapy and also has an emphasis on counter-programming against your evolutionarily wired negativity bias.
This protocol, again, which is called More, was originally designed for people with full-blown addictions, but as you're about to hear, there are lots of extremely practical ways that everyone can weave aspects of this practice into daily life. And the evidence strongly suggests it will lead to an upgrade in the experience of being alive. My guest is Dr. Eric Garland, PhD. He's a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California in San Diego.
