Hello and welcome to how I built this lab. I'm Guy Raz. This is the place where we break format and experiment with ideas and stories that you might not hear on our Monday episode, and also A chance to find out what happened to some of the founders I've interviewed on the show in the past. So back in June of 2020, I had Pyle Kadakia on the show, and you can go check that out in our podcast queue. Pyle co-founded the fitness brand ClassPass. It's basically like Expedia or Kayak, but for fitness classes. In January of twenty twenty.
ClassPass raised a round of financing at a$1 billion valuation, and for Pyle, it was an incredible validation of a business that had its ups and downs. In its early days, ClassPass was a way you could sign up for all kinds of classes, photography, cooking, singing, you name it. But over time, it became a really powerful force in the fitness industry. All seemed to be going well until, of course, March of 2020. when the pandemic all but shut down fitness centers across the US and around the world. When Pyle was last on the show, she was dealing with layoffs and even uncertainty over whether ClassPass would make it. But late in 2021,
ClassPass was acquired by a company called MindBody for an undisclosed amount. Now, Pyle's just released a book about how she learned to become a leader and live a life of purpose.
