Hello and welcome to How I Built This Lab. I'm Guy Raz. Americans with roots in Latin America account for more than 18% of the population, and this year The collective purchasing power of Latinos is estimated to hit$2.8 trillion. And yet a significant number of young Latinos are considered underbanked, meaning they don't have easy access to financial institutions and things like savings accounts or loans. So Beatres Acevedo started a financial technology company to see if she could solve the problem. It's called SumoWealth and it was founded in the middle of a pandemic. The platform offers up educational tools to help young Latinos figure out how to become financially literate.

Before she launched Suma, Petries was the founder of Me Too. a multi-channel media company that was designed to serve Latinos in the US. Beatriz was born and raised mainly in Mexico, and she got her start as a kid co-hosting a show on her local radio station in Mexico City. So I was in love with this kid from a boy band called Menudo, and this kid was Ricky Martin. And I thought that if I got into being a radio DJ one day when Menudo came to my small hometown, I could eventually meet the band and

fall in love with Ricky and get married. So I had my whole life planned ahead of me at eight. So that's how I got into radio. And Did you ever get to meet Ricky? Yes, I did. I got to meet Ricky and interview Ricky, not marry him, obviously.
