Hello and welcome to How I Built This Lab. I'm Guy Raz. The term renewable energy often conjures the image of row upon row of solar panels or giant wind turbines on a hillside. But there's another nearly limitless source of clean energy that You might not immediately think of one that's right below our feet.

Geothermal energy. Now the core of our planet is over 9,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about the same temperature as the surface of the sun. And if we could somehow tap into all that heat? We'd have more than enough energy to power human civilization for millions of years. The problem is, Unless you live somewhere like Iceland or another volcanically active area.

We just can't get to it. It's Buried too deep underground. But that may be about to change. My guest today is Carlos Araque. He's the co-founder and CEO of a company called Quase Energy, which plans to use a new technology developed at MIT. to drill deeper than any hole that's ever been drilled before.
