Winston Churchill was a passionate defender of Britain's monarchy, but that didn't mean he always saw eye to eye with the royals themselves. In this episode of the History Extra podcast, John Borkham talks to Ted Powell about Churchill's complex relationship with the Crown. From his clashes with George V and controversial support for Edward VIII to his role in guiding the young Elizabeth II through the early years of her reign. And to hear more about Winston Churchill's skills as PM, don't miss the latest episode of our new series, History's Greatest Leaders, in which entrepreneur Mike Soutar talks to Taylor Downing about Churchill's dynamism and difficult side. You can find all the details of that in the description to this episode, but for now it's over to John and Ted.
Ted, welcome to the History Extra podcast. Thank you very much, John. Winston Churchill is one of the most widely studied figures in British history. There's no shortage of books or films and documentaries about his life, and of course his wartime leadership. Why write this book and why now?
It's surprising. Given the the thousands of books that have been written on Churchill and the thousands of books written on the royal family, you would have thought that there would be a a full-length study. on the relationship between Churchill and the and the monarchy in Britain and abroad. But curiously enough, when I was getting into my reading after the the first my first biography, the study of Edward VIII and America, I found that there there wasn't actually a good, full-length treatment of this relationship.
