The more you ask, the more you will get. There's this fascinating study that talks about how somewhere around 65% of people never negotiate their first salary, which will cost us somewhere between one and one and a half million dollars over the course of our career. But people who do negotiate, somewhere around 87 to 90% of the time we'll get something out of it. So we overestimate the amount of failure we're going to receive, which is meaning that we are getting so much less than we deserve.
That's Tia Cresci. She spent the last 20 years helping professionals learn to negotiate and influence better, including negotiating on behalf of the US State Department in some of the most complex conflict zones around the world. She's also the co-author of Never Settle, Persuasion and Negotiation Skills to Get What You Want. So you'll learn one, how to take the fear and tension out of negotiating, two, the simple trick to arrive at more win-win solutions, and three, how to feel comfortable making big asks and saying no. And if you want a quick summary write-up of the actual wisdom that ATIA shares, you can find that over at awesomeatyourjob.com with the free gold nugget email newsletters.
