American writer Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House novels have enchanted generations of readers with their tales of family life on the nineteenth century American frontier. And they are the subject of a recent adaptation on Netflix that forms another chapter in the book's Long History. In today's episode of the History Extra podcast, Eleanor Evans is joined by Pamela Smith Hill, author of books including Laura Ingallswilder, A Writer's Life, and Laura Ingallswilder's Pioneer Girl, The Annotated Autobiography. Together they discuss Wilder's beloved children's stories and how the success of the series often obscures a more complicated history of hardship, displacement, And prejudice.

Can you give us a little bit of an introduction of of her life and her work? What would you like listeners to know straight off the bat? Lauren Gleswilder was a revolutionary children's book and young adult author who published in the 1930s and 1940s. Her work forever changed the literary landscape in children's and young adult literature in the United States, but her work became so iconic. That over the years and over the many generations, her work has also become very controversial. So she is at once beloved.
And it was severely criticized. For her portrayal of the past. Still. She casts a very long shadow over modern contemporary American literature.
