Welcome to the History Extra podcast, fascinating historical conversations from the makers of BBC History magazine. On the 30th of January 1649, Charles I was led onto a freshly erected scaffold outside of Whitehall's banqueting house in London. Thousands of spectators watched in shock and awe as the King of England, Scotland and Ireland was executed as a traitor. It was the climax of one of the most destructive sagas in Britain and Ireland's history. But what led to this brutal outcome?

And was conflict inevitable? History Extra's new podcast series, Uprising, The Civil Wars, produced by Hisfest, sees historian Rebecca Radil chart this extraordinary story from the first battles in Scotland to the all-out war in England and Wales. Speaking to historical experts, she explores a story of shifting loyalties and devastating conflict, and here, in this special bonus episode, Rebecca and one of those experts, Dr. Jonathan Healy, spoke to Emily Briffitt about why this area of history is so fascinating and the causes and consequences of the conflict. I hope today that we can find out more about this extraordinary moment in history and perhaps also go behind the scenes of the uprising podcast.

But before we dive in, would you both mind introducing yourselves? I'm Jonathan Healy, I was one of the expert contributors on the podcast and I've written a couple of books about the 17th century and the English Civil War and I'm a 17th century historian. And I'm Rebecca Redeal, I'm a historian of the 17th century, and I hosted and produced the podcast series. It's wonderful to have you both on today.
