From the moment Islam originated as a religion in the early medieval era, its people have found themselves inexorably intertwined with the followers of the Jewish faith. In this episode of the History Extra podcast, Mark David Baer explores the long relationship between these two religions and their peoples, marking moments of tension and peace. Today I'm joined by Professor Mark David Baer to discuss his new book, Children of Abraham, which explores over a thousand years of the history of relations between the followers of Judaism and Islam. Now, Mark, this certainly isn't a theological book, but I do think a little bit of theological and historical context about these two religions, their origins, what it means to be an Abrahamic religion and their differences would be really helpful because fundamentally these are two religions that are both Orientated toward the same God, aren't they?

Yes. Judaism and Islam are both strict monotheistic religions. And when we look at the Torah, the Jewish holy book, it tells a story about how Abraham and his wife Sarah are unable to have children. So Sarah allows Abraham to have a child. with his concubine Hagar.

And they have a child, Hagar and Abraham have a child named Ishmael. After that, again, sticking with the story in the Torah, the Jewish holy book, Abraham and Sarah are able to conceive, and that child is known as Isaac. And the Jewish people, we trace our history, our heritage, our lineage to Isaac, because in our holy book in the Torah, it says that this is the God's chosen people through this line. But it's also the case that the story of Abraham and Hagar continues in the Torah.
