In order to understand Frida Kahlo, how important is it to understand the Mexico that she was born into? Oh it's absolutely essential.

She was such a An artist of Mexico and Mexico of the revolution and post revolutionary period. She actually as a teenager started saying she was born in nineteen ten, which was the year the revolution started as a way of allying herself with the revolution, and she was a woman of the left who supported Communism, not that the Mexican Revolution was communist, but it was a socially progressive revolution which sought to change Mexico, land reform, for instance, workers' rights, a full separation of church and state, including you know, restricting all sorts of public displays of religiosity. So quite a social revolution that really sought to remake Mexico. And it was coming out of a period which was much more conservative, much more culturally Orient towards Europe, especially France, and the Mexican revolution really said, What about Mexico? What about Mexican culture? Let's celebrate what we have.
